“When wireless is perfectly applied the whole earth will be converted into a huge brain, which in fact it is, all things being particles of a real and rhythmic whole………and the instruments through which we shall be able to do this will be amazingly simple compared with our present telephone. A man will be able to carry one in his vest pocket.”
1926: Nikola Tesla in an interview with Colliers magazine

IoT What?
Have you ever wondered where your glasses are, where your phone is. Yeah, we’ve all been there. Losing stuff all the time. searching all the way.So the scientists have gathered to come up with solution for keeping things at the tip of our hand. By attaching sensors and chips. So that we never lose a single thing we own.
You know, the lightbulb on the kitchen that we wanted to control with our smartphone, then the door that we wanted to lock with our phone. The smart home speaker named Alexa. These are all examples of IOT !
Now lets get to how it works. Well not to talk technically, it’s like controlling them with internet. Yes ! The very own internet that we use in order to stay connected with our friends. So it also have the capability to connect with other devices too! like the door, the fridge, the coffee machine, etc. So that you don’t have to physically go there and press buttons.

So how does it work?
Simple! It just contains a sensor. Any sensor would do. Motion sensor, light sensor, moisture sensor, temperature sensor, etc. They are then connected with other micro-chips. These sensors collect information from its surroundings. When connected to internet, they then passes the information. They have their unique identifiers.Even a heart monitor implant can also be connected. An animal with a biochip transponder can be detected where its going.

IoT in Bangladesh
Initiative of being digital bangladesh, our It firms have also adapted IoT. Grameenphone, DataSoft, and many other IT firms are into IoT production and development sector. Some of them introduced Face ID, Fingerprint Scanner , Smart lock system in their compounds. DataSoft is not only manufacturing these devices, they are exporting on the global market also.

Why it can be dangerous
As all our devices are connected with each other. If hacked one device, it can be risky for the other devices too. On 2016, there was a IoT attack named Mirai. A botnet that hacked a server provider Dyn and took over many websites. So it attacked all the devices connected with the server too.
How to prevent it?
Well its not really stoppable but we can reduce the effect of it. By giving them each a different password. Providing personal information carefully. Not connecting with social media accounts unless really necessary. Turn on verification system via mobile phone.
Coca-Cola !
Surprisingly, the first IoT device was a Coca-Cola vending machine situated at the Carnegie Melon University ! The programmers there integrated micro-switches and used an early form of the internet to check if the device was keeping the drinks cold enough. Since then a lot of work has been done and it improved. Later In 1990, John Romkey connected a toaster to the internet.Since then it is a blooming field.

Why you should use it?
It’s application is limitless. You can add it in your hospital machines, you can add the devices to your smart home. You can add them on your car. You can add them on your agriculture. I can not even imagine the future without IoT devices!
If you own a business, you can easily keep track of all your devices on real time and monitor overall process.
To save Time and money .
To Increase employee productivity
To improve the business model.
To take better decisions in the future.
To create more revenue

Thoughts on it
The technology have always been a little scary and a fun thing. From the dark web to tik tok videos, to playing games to keeping tracks of Covid-19 patients count. It have always been very helpful. I cannot stress enough how i use google on daily basis. We can not stop the revolution but we can make it better, by using it wisely and carefully. Not using them to do illegal works but work to improve our future. Hopefully this IoT will bring a new era of tech that’s both healthy and safe. Here’s to a new Future!

If you want to feed the world in 2050 ,then next 30 years we need to produce 58% to 98% more than the present and that gives a indication of the pressure on the food system. We are facing a formidable challenge with a growing population with the changing consumption behavior of the climate. As a result, security of the food production becomes the burning question in the contemporary world. The real secret to solve this problem is sustainable production with less inputs, less fertilizer, less pesticides, less water.Otherwise we will destroy our planet.
Let me tell you a story of a magical world which has an unexpected food super power.A magic was created where machines will think , take decisions according to the situation and perform the task like humans do.This super magic is known as artificial intelligence. The agricultural sector is chanted by the magical spell of AI (Artificial Intelligence).
Suppose it’s a hot and sunny day and you realize you need to drink lots of fluids to help you to be comfortable while you work.On the contrary, you would not notice that you haven’t a sip of anything in hours on a cooler day.All living beings including plants live each day at a similar fashion. The difference is noted that humans and other animals could go seeking for water and other fluids while plants rely on water to come to them in form of rains or irrigations.Plants are stationary and voiceless.Hence, they can neither ask for more water when thirsty nor stop drinking it when saturated much like other species clamps have different water needs based on their growth stage and environmental conditions and died till water helps to utilize nutrients keeping the crops healthy and resistant to pests. For this reason, the farmers needs to listen to it’s crop’s speech and that’s what the cultivate water management system does.It enables the farmer to listen and understand the crop water needs every single day.Using IOT devices such as soil moisture, sensors pulse, powered water flow sensors, pump control humidity and temperature sensors and sophisticated crop models that learn the cause and effect of the environment on each crop. The cultivate water management system helps an ideal watering of different crops based on their specific daily needs .The wireless sensors constantly monitor the weather and send data to the cloud. An artificial intelligence powered algorithm a water schedule and triggers a battery operated low energy valve to control the flow of water based on the availability of power provided by the motor sensor while measuring the water flow using a battery-operated wireless flow sensor.Such precision watering helps in significant increase in crop yield ,conserving water and substially reducing the need for manual labour excessive fertilizers and pestilence been built ground to operate under different farm conditions while keeping it affordable.
Intelligent robots are contributing to agriculture to a great extent. They are harvesting crops, ploughing lands and what not. They are the best alternative to low-skilled domestic workers. They are comparatively faster than them.”Vgebot”,a lettuce harvesting robot, has two cameras. One camera scans the lettuce and gives a thumps up or down for harvesting.A second camera, positioned near blade, then guides the pick without crushing plant.Meanwhile, a machine learning algorithm teaches the robot to avoid unripe or disease lettuse.
Goldoon is an intelligent device that acts as a base to preplotted plant .It uses AI to learn user watering behavior and understand external factors that may affect how water a plant need.Over time the goldoon can take control of watering the plants through an attached pot.
Weed control is an important part of the farming.plants can resist weed killer chemicals .But the customers are really adverse to chemically treated food. So,it can’t be a perfect solution.Thats why weed killing robots with artificial intelligence is introducedUsing AI,they make difference between the plant and the
weeds.
From the kindergarten ,we have leant that pesticides mixed with rain water and fall into water bodies. Thus the pesticides pollute water. But this generation has a smarter way to solve it.Pesticides spraying drones detect pest and spray pesticides on them.Besides, farmer may get a high resolution picture with the help of drones. There are many apps in smart phones which will detect the disease or what nutrients do the plant lacks seeing the plants.Drones can help in this case by clicking photos .
Any UAV pilot who wants to fly a drone that weighs more than 55 pounds at takeoff (including cargo) needs to petition for a special exemption through the F.A.A. That means non-exempt farmers who want to drone-scatter seeds over their acreage are limited in how many pounds of seed they can spread in a single run. Still, a number of manufacturers have developed drones marketed specifically for that purpose.
UAV system international sells two drones that spread seed and fertilizer, one with a payload capacity of about four pounds and another with a roughly 11-pound payload. Both have a two-mile flight range and a 20-minute limit, according to the company. UAV also markets crop sprayer drones and surveillance drones that inspect crop health.
One of the major advantages of robots is their flexibility to perform a variety of tasks and applications in any environment. They are more precise and consistent than people. They increase production and profit margin, as they can accomplish tasks more quickly. Robots can work 24 hours a day since they do not need holidays, sick days, or breaks. They also make fewer mistakes than people and save time. Robots eliminate work that is dangerous to humans.
All these qualities make robots with AI the perfect choice for agriculture, especially as farms grow in size. Traditionally, agriculture requires numerous repetitions and hard labor with considerably low speed for planting, irrigation, fertilization, monitoring, and harvesting a large area of crops. But today, a single robot can do all these processes with less dependency on human labor.
Advantages of aI in agriculture:
1.The robots are not getting sick or tired, and the time off is not needed
2.With higher speeds and closer tolerances, they can operate with fewer errors.
3.They make fewer errors and operate at higher velocities and higher quality.
4.The robots can reduce the use of pesticides by up to 80% of the farm.
5.In different fields, robots are more efficient and can work around trees, rocks, ponds, and other obstacles easily.
6.For technicians, the robots can create jobs that can fix the robots.
7.The robots can deliver products of high quality and lower the cost of production.
8.Robots gantry can function as both fertilizer or liquid sprays and, most importantly, as an automatic self-control system that meets weather conditions.
9.They can be small in size, allowing to accumulate near-crop data and perform mechanical weeding, mowing, spraying, and fertilizing.
10.Robotic cameras and sensors are capable of detecting weeds, identifying pests, parasites or diseases, and other stress. Usually, the sensors are selective and are only used to spray on the affected area.
11.Robots with AI provide an opportunity to replace human operators with a good return on investment by providing effective solutions.
Disadvantages of AI in agriculture
1.It costs a lot of money to make or buy robots.
2.They need maintenance to keep them running.
3.The farmers can lose their jobs.
4.The robots can change the culture of the emotional appeal of agriculture.
5.Energy cost and maintenance.
6.The high cost of research and development.
7.Lack of access to poor farmers.

Artificial Intelligence make the world smarter. It also make us smart in food production.By using this technology,we will be able to feed the growing population.Although AI has negative sides,we should use it properly to modernize our agricultural sector .So it’s really a blessing for us.

The Internet of things (loT) is a system of interrelated computing devices, mechanical and digital machines provided with unique identifiers (UlDs) and the ability to transfer data over a network without requiring human – to – human or human – to – computer interaction. The definition of the lnternet of things has evolved due to the convergence of multiple technologies, real-time analytics , machine learning, commodity sensors and embedded systems. Traditional fields of embedded systems, wireless sensor networks, control systems, automation ( including home and building automation), and others all contribute to enabling the internet of things .ln consumer market, IoT technology is most synonyms with products pertaining to the concept of the ” smart home “, covering devices and appliances (such as lighting fixtures, thermostats, home security systems and cameras and other home appliances) that support one or more common ecosystems, and can be controlled via devices associated with that ecosystem, such as smartphone and smart speakers. There are a number of serious concerns about dangers in the growth of loT, especially in the areas of privacy and security, and consequently industry and governmental moves to address these concerns have begun. The main concept of a network of smart device was discussed as early as 1982 , with a modified Coca-Cola vending machine at Carnegie Mellon University becoming the first lnternet – connected appliance, able to report its inventory and whether newly loaded drinks were cold or not. Mark Weiser’s 1991 paper on ubiquitous computing, ” The Computer of the 21st Century”, as well as academic venues such as UbiComp and PerCom produced the contemporary vision of the loT. In 1994, Reza Raji described the concept in IEEE Spectrum as “[moving]” small packets of data to a large set of nodes, so as to integrate and automate everything from home appliances to entire factories.” Between 1993 and 1997 , several companies proposed solutions like Microsoft’s at Work or Novell’s NEST .The field gained momentum when Bill Joy envisioned device – to – device communication as a part of his ” Six Webs ” framework, presented at the World Economic Forum at Davos in 1999 . The term “lnternet of things” was likely coined by Kevin Ashton is of Procter & Gamble, later MIT’s Auto ID Center, in 1999,though he prefers the phrase “Internet for things. ” At that point, he viewed radio – frequency identification (RFID) as essential to the Internet of things , which would allow computers to manage all individual things. Defining the Internet of things as “simply the point in time when more ‘things or object’ were connected to the lnternet than people ” , Cisco Systems estimated that the loT was “born” between 2008 and 2009,with the things / people ratio growing from 0.08 in 2003 to 1.84 in 2010. The key driving force behind the lnternet of things is the MOSFET ( metal-oxide – semiconductor field -effect transistor or MOS transistor), which was originally invented by Mohamed M. Atalla and Dawon Kahng at Bell Labs in 1959.The MOSFET is the basic building block of most modern electronics, including computers , smartphones ,tablets and Internet services. MOSFET scaling miniaturization at a pace predicted by Dennard scaling and Moore’s law has been the driving force behind technological advances in the electronics industry since the late 20th century. MOSFET scaling has been extended into the early 21st century with advances such as reducing power consumption , silicon – on – insulator (SOI) semiconductor device fabrication, and multi – core processor technology, leading up to the Internet of things, which is being driven by MOSFETs scaling down to nanoelectronic levels with reducing energy consumption. One of the key drivers of the loT is data. The success of the idea of connecting devices to make them more efficient is dependent upon access to and storage & processing of data. For this purpose, companies working on the loT collect data from multiple sources and store it in their cloud network for further processing. This leaves the door wide open for privacy and security dangers and single point vulnerability of multiple systems. The other issues pertain to consumer choice and ownership of data and how to it used. Though still in their infancy, regulations and governance regarding these issues of privacy, security, and data ownership continue to develop. IoT regulation depends on the country. Some examples of legislation that is relevant to privacy and data collection are: the US Privacy Act 1974 , OECD Guidelines on the Protection of Privacy and Transborder Flows of Personal Data of 1980, and the EU Directive 95/46/EC of 1995.
Current regulatory environment :
A report published by the Federal Trade Commission ( FTC) in January 2015 made the following three recommendations:
• Data security – At the time of designing loT companies should ensure that data collection, storage and processing would be secure at all the times. Companies should adopt a “defence in depth ” approach and encrypt data at each stage.
•Data consent – users should have a choice as to what data they share with loT companles and the users must be informed if their data gets exposed.
•Data minimization -loT companies should collect only the data they need and retain the collected information only for a limited time.
However, the FTC stopped at just making recommendations for now. According to an FTC analysis, the existing framework, consisting of the FTC Act , the Fair Credit Reporting Act, and the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act, along with developing consumer education and business guidance, participation in multi -stakeholder efforts and advocacy to other agencies at the federal, state and local level, is sufficient to protect consumer rights. A resolution passed by the Senate in March 2015, is already being considered by the Congress. The resolution recognized the need for formulating a National Policy on loT and the matter of privacy, security and spectrum. Furthermore, to provide an impetus to be the loT ecosystem, in March, 2016 , a bipartisan group of four Senators proposed a bill, The Developing Innovation and Growing the Internet of things (DlGlT) Act, to direct the Federal Communications Commission to assess the need for more spectrum to connect loT devices. Approved on 28 September 2018, Senate Bill No. 327 goes into effect on 1 January 2020.The bill requires ” a manufacturer of a connected device, as those terms are defined, to equip the device with a reasonable security feature or features that are appropriate to the nature and function of the device, appropriate to the information it may collect, contain or transmit, and designed to protect the device and any information contained therein from unauthorized access, destruction, use, modification or disclosure.” Several standards for the lot industry are actually being established relating to automobiles because most concerns arising from use of connected cars apply to healthcare devices as well. In fact, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is preparing cybersecurity guidelines and a database of best practices to make automotive computer systems more secure.
A recent report from the World Bank examines the challenges and opportunities in government adoption of loT. These include –
•Still early days for the loT in government.
•Underdeveloped policy and regulatory frameworks.
•Unclear business models, despite strong value proposition.
•Clear institutional and capacity gap in government AND the private sector.
•lnconsistent data valuation and management.
•lnfrastructure a major barrier.
•Government as an enabler.
•Most successful pilots share common characteristics (public – private partnership, local, leadership)
In conclusion, Internet of Things is the concept in which the virtual world of information technology connected to the real world of things. The technologies of lnternet of things such as RFID and Sensor make our life become better and more comfortable.

What if you wake up one fine morning, get off of your bed and surprisingly your bed starts to get arranged all by itself. Now you try to look for your slippers but they’re nowhere near so you just call it out loud saying, “need my sandals!!” and the next thing you notice is your slippers are coming to you automatically. Being very delighted, you go to washroom, turn your water heater on and take a pleasant warm shower. After having breakfast, you call your self-driving car while standing at the door and take a safe ride to your office.

Now all these examples may sound too imperturbable to be true but humankind is actually going through this era right now where almost everything around them tends to get inter-connected using network. And this is exactly the rudimentary concept of “Internet Of Things”; which is also known as IOT.

What is Internet Of Things?

To be more precise, the phrase “Internet of Things” refers to a system of interrelated computing devices, mechanical and digital machines provided with unique identifiers and the ability to transfer data over a network without requiring human-to-human or human-to-computer interaction.

Kevin Ashton is credited with coming up with the concept of Internet of Things (IOT) in 1999.

How does IOT work?

To start off simply, this whole concept basically illustrates a connection between any devices with an On & Off switch to the Internet. This includes everything from cellphones, coffee makers, lamps, wearable devices and almost anything else you can think of. This also applies to components of machines like a jet engine of an airplane or the drill of an oil-rig.

Sophisticated chips and sensors are embedded in the physical things that surround us. Each is transmitting valuable data. Every device with built-in sensor is connected to an IOT platform that can investigate what exact information can come in handy and what can be emitted. This information is required,
• To detect patterns
• Make recommendations and
• Detect possible problems before they occur.

Why do we need to connect things?

Lately, there’s been a solid controversy about the fact that just because everything can be connected doesn’t substantially mean that it should be. But each device collects data for a specific purpose that may be useful to a buyer and impact the wider economy.

Why don’t we just check up on some scholars and cognize what they say about the significance of IOT?

“IOT offers us opportunity to be more efficient in how we do things, saving us time, money and often emissions in the process”, according to Matthew Evans, the IOT program head at TechUK. It allows companies, governments and public authorities to re-think how they deliver services and produce goods.

Again, “The quality and scope of the data across the Internet of Things generates an opportunity for much more contextualized and responsive interactions with devices to create a potential for change”, said Caroline Gorski, the head of IOT and digital manufacturing at the Digital Catapult.

The SWOT analysis of Internet of things:

Strengths of IOT:

In a nutshell, IOT promises to make our lives tranquil to a massive extent where it:

• Increases efficient resource utilization.
• Minimizes human effort
• Saves time & money
• Enhances data collection
• Improves security
• Automates the daily tasks and provides a better monitoring of the devices

Weaknesses of IOT:
Well from the discussion above, we can at least come up with this idea that IOT simply means to connect anything and everything you want. But then again, can we deny the fact that anything that’s connected within a network can be hacked?
Absolutely not. In fact, this is where this whole system drifts apart to a significant extent and gets confronted by human trust issues. With the evolution of networks all around as the number of connected devices and shared information increase, so do security and privacy concerns. There’s also an issue of surveillance as well.
Some of the other issues also need to be taken into account in order to set the benchmark,
• Over dependence on machineries can drag down human efficiency as well as deteriorate health conditions. To which extent should we be dependent on IOT?
• Since devices will be vastly inter-connected, one disturbance can interrupt the whole network pretty easily.
• Unemployment will be a crucial problem in the near future.
Opportunities of IOT:
• Healthcare applications
• Wearable.
• Infrastructure management
• Making computer omnipresent
• Exciting investment opportunities
Threats of IOT:
• Vulnerability to hackers.
• Lack of demand.
• Unemployment issue.
• Human health deterioration
• Inability to meet the expectation

DID YOU KNOW?
As of 2019, more than 26.66 billion IOT devices have been active. It’s estimated that the number of active IOT devices will surpass 30.73 billion in 2020. According to current statistics on IOT devices, the number will surpass 3.5 billion by 2023, with Asia leading the charge.

4 predictions about Internet of Things:
i. The IOT devices such as machines and sensors are expected to generate 79.4 Zettabytes of data in 2025 (International Data Corporation). Also, IOT will grow at a compound annual growth rate of 28.7% over 2020 to 2025.
ii. The Internet of Things Grows Artificial Intelligence
iii. 5G is central to the IOT or single network for billions of applications
iv. Routers will become more Secure to block unwanted access

Despite having drawbacks in connecting everything with a single network, the fact that IOT brings everything under control and make our lives way easier than before is irrefutable. But since IOT deals with a lot of personal information and biometrics, the solution to security issue is still undetermined. Efforts will have to be made to find ways to combat its disadvantages. It is evident that it opens a wide array of possibilities to enhance the quality of life in all aspects. But it is essential that we tap on the right spots to make this technology work the best for us.

Defining artificial intelligence is a very difficult task cause we can’t really understand human intelligence. As with many concepts, artificial intelligence can be referred as the simulation of human intelligence in machines which are programmed to think and execute actions like human mind. Artificial Intelligence based computer or computer controlled robots complete the tasks with a certain degree of powers such as-learning, reasoning and self-correction. It is one of the most complex and astounding creations of humanity.
Scientists and filmmakers of 20th century introduced the world with the concept of artificial intelligence. Questions were rising among people after watching movies like Wizard of Oz or Metropolis that-“Can machine think?” In 1950’s Alan Turing, a young British mathematician and WW2 code breaker first proposed the idea of artificial intelligence in a logical framework of his 1950’s paper. His logic about AI(Artificial Intelligence) was if human brains use available informations and reasons to solve problems then why can’t machine do the same. But unfortunately, computers before 1949 lacked a key prerequisite for intelligence. Then In 1980s,the evolution of personal computer sparked more and it makes another step on the progress of AI technology. But still it took decades for the world to recognise the power of AI. High profile investors and physicists, like Elon Mask and Stephen Hawking continued the conversation about the potential of AI technology, which gradually started changing the course of human history. With the rise of this technology, computers start collecting data and analyse through crafted algorithms. Now the machine is better at making predictions.
AI can be classified in many ways. There are two types of AI based on capability. They are 1.Weak AI 2.Strong AI. The phenomenon that makes which are not too intelligent to do their own work can be built as weak AI. When it come to strong AI, those machines are capable of thinking and performing task on their own just like human being. On the basis of functionality, there are four types of AI. Such as- 1.Reactive Machines 2.Limited Memory 3.Theory of Mind 4.Self- awareness. Reactive machines doesn’t use past information for future actions. Limited memory is based on storing information for a particular time. Theory of mind is designed to understand people’s emotion, belief, thoughts, expectations and to be able to interact socially. This kind of bot need a lot of improvement and is not complete yet. Lastly, Self awareness goes for a kind of machine which is considered as a complete human being. Of course, this kind of bot doesn’t exist and if achieved then it will be a milestone in the field of AI.
When we hear about artificial intelligence, it’s obvious to assume it’s only something the big tech giants are focused on. But in reality, most of us encounter artificial intelligence from morning to night. Not sure what movie to watch tonight? Don’t worry, Netflix has some suggestions based on your previous viewing experiences. Not in a mood of typing an email, there’s nothing to worry about. Gmail offers “Smart Reply” option. You can choose your best reply with the click of a button. Artificial Intelligence makes it easier for users in every day life, both online and offline. AI technology has also been used to help with Google predictive searches, Google algorithm etc. For example, a search of “What is the population of Bangladesh” offers Google’s choice of “best answer” highlighted at the top, followed by a list of sources that answer the question. Amazon and other online retainers use AI to gather information about our preferences. When you search for an item such as-“Sony Headphones” the search engine also shows related items that other people have purchased when searching for the same product. AI offers a lot more social and financial aids such as-mobile banking, financial fraud prevention, finding quickest route to your destination by Google Maps. Travelling sites are also dominated by AI technology. There are a lot of ride sharing apps which help people like Uber. Actually, it’s comforting to know that most of us have been using AI on a daily basis for many years.
AI is using as substitute of human beings day by day. The phrase “human error” was born because humans make mistakes from time to time. Computers, however, do not make these mistakes if they are programmed properly. AI robots also take risks instead of human. Most of us heard about the Chernobyl nuclear power plant explosion in Ukraine. AI robots can be used to minimize the effect of radiation where intervention can be hazardous. AI technology also can make machines work 24×7 without any break and they don’t even get bored. We all have played chess games in Windows. It’s nearly impossible to beat CPU in the hard mode because of the AI behind the game. Machines are more logical and confirmed at making decisions with the blessing of AI technology.
Those are all the bright sides of AI. But when we look at the big picture, everything in excess is dangerous and so is the case with AI. As it’s always said, every coin has two sides. When Oxford University professor Nick Bostrom New York Times bestseller Super Intelligence: Paths, Dangers, Strategies was first published in 2014’s,it stuck a nerve at the heart of this debate with it’s focus on all the things that could go wrong.
If we focus on what’s possible today with AI, there are some potential negative impacts that should be considered. AI technology is highly expensive. There is a huge investment for its- installation, repair and maintenance with software upgrading cost. After all, if there’s any breakdown, the cost of procurement is very high. Also, AI based machines can’t cope up with the dynamic environment. With time, it can lead to wear and tear only. Though it can help in designing and creating, machines can’t match the power of human brain. Machines are logical but they can’t possess emotions and moral values. They don’t have own judgement making skills, they don’t know what’s ethical, what’s legal and what is not. They can’t think out of the box.
The riskiest among all is, if in the future, human brains don’t add to their skills, then in no time, we can see that they’ll be replaced with machines.
Some of the leading scientists and thinkers have warned about ‘Technological Singularity’. It refers to the belief that ordinary humans will someday be overtaken by artificial Intelligent machines or cognitively enhanced biological intelligence on both. Simply, AI being a little bit like children playing with a bomb that could go off at any time.
It’s obvious to admit that AI is a milestone of technology. Now it’s really hard to say that it’ll not go beyond human intelligence. And if scientists can finally gain that achievement, only time will tell us what it brings to our world.

Nowadays you are very familiar with the term of automation. But there are lots of people who rarely keep any deep knowledge about this term. Basically, Automation is the magic baby of science. After reading this blog, you can know about automation such as what is automation, where is it used, the benefits of automation, the flexible working time and place after using this, its impact on the office environment, its effects on the education system, its effects on the communication systems, the disadvantages of automation, the huge unemployment problem, and its solution and so many things. Let’s start……

What is automation?

By listening to the word you can easily understand that something has be done automatically. Absolutely, it is. In the technical phrase, automation means using a computer or various control systems for operating any equipment like machines in the factories, boilers, and heat ovens instead of manpower. This is very skilled, efficient, time-saving, then a human being.

Where is the automation used?

You can ask better where isn’t it used? Manufacturing factories, agricultural land, hospitals, offices, banks, educational institutions, sports, journalism, film, and entertainment, photography, communication system, defense academy, air force, developing the plan, government-run, administration, all the sectors are under the umbrella of automation.

The benefits of automation

The benefits of automation can’t describe in words. It is huge. In short, just think if you need some cash money do you go to any bank branch and take any service from the banker in the face to face communication in this COVID -19 pandemic? Or prefer online banking services. In this way, taking degrees from the online course, taking medical check-up through mobile phone, buying products and getting home delivery, talking with relatives and friends in a video call, the robots are performed efficiently in a risky zone where a person has his life risk, playing the online game, and getting rid of boringness are some of the privileges that we get only for automation. Oh, now we are passing the holy month of Ramadan so you obviously wake up at midnight to eat the Sheri by listening to the tone of mobile alarm. It is also automation. But if you ask your parents you can know that earlier in the day, a group of youngsters used to wake up people to eat Sheri by singing songs.

Automation and the flexible working time and place

If you can visit before some decades through a time machine you would find a situation where most of the labor hours were gone to do simple work. There was a pile of papers on the desk of the office, a pile of the equipment in the factories. And they had to go to the offices or factories to do the work. But when I write this blog I write in my own time and place. There is no binding working time such as 9 to 5. And you also read it in your own time and place.

Automation and the office environment

Today you see an office with total digitalized. There is no paper documents, pens, staplers, phone books, dairies, sticky tap, paper map, etc. There all things are replaced by a laptop, computer, or tablet. Because you can do all materials works through one computer. And it is possible for automation.

Automation and the education system

Automation has come to a revolutionary change in the education system. Most of the world’s best educational institutions are admitting their students, taking classes, examinations, even giving certificates online. It reduces the labor cost, makes sure transparency, removes global distance, and saves time. Think, you need to know about a country’s location for your geographic exam. Do you look at a paper map or do you search for it on your mobile globe? Obviously, Your answer is the mobile globe.

Automation and communication system

Imagine in the past when the people write a letter to their loved ones and send it by tying it to the feet of a pigeon, or sending a telegram, it would take years and years for the letter to reach the loved one. They didn’t even know had their letter reached to a loved one or not? But Now you are used to communicating through the internet. You can easily make communication within a second. You can go one corner to another corner of the world by just taking a few hours. That all are automation.

The disadvantages of automation

There is nothing in the world which has only advantages. Automation is not different from others. It also has some disadvantages too. It is very expensive, creates inequality in the business sector, increases unemployment problem and monopoly power, losses on human interaction, shows a lack of empathy on events, etc. Whose adopt this they will gainer and whose don’t adopt they will loser.

Automation, a huge unemployment problem, and its solution

The automation system can do many works within a very short time. So the world largely follows the automation system. If it is happening continuously, in a survey it is found that by the next century, a $17 billion job market will go to the automated and 16% workforce will reduce for human beings. So what will happen to human beings? How can they live and earn their livelihood? Don’t forget that every problem has a lot of solutions. We just need to find out the appropriate solution. It opens the STEM ( science, technology, engineering, and math) door. If we can focus on these four sectors and make the people efficiency in any particular sector. Then the problem will be solved and the people can earn more by giving less effort.

Automation systems are very easy to use, give a comfortable and dynamic life. But if it falls into the hands of a bad person, it will do a lot of harm to people. So we have to be very careful about using this.

“Internet of things” refers to the ever-growing network of physical objects that feature an IP address for internet connectivity, and the communication that occurs amongst these objects and systems. It extends internet connectivity beyond traditional devices like desktop and laptop computers, smartphones and tablets to a diverse range of devices that utilize embedded technology to communicate and interact with the external environment.
In 2018, BTRC issued a directive in a preliminary effort to develop policy for the new technology in Bangladesh and permission to use it in 9 sectors: smart building, industry automation, smart grids, water management, waste management, smart agriculture, telecare, intelligent transport systems, environment management, smart urban lighting, and smart parking.
The IoT-enabled Internet has been progressively emerging as an extremely rich, heterogeneous array of business and consumer use cases, requirements and environments. The integration of IoT is transforming Internet into a real-time conduit of unimaginable amounts of data that can be analyzed to make better decisions, improve performance, and grow profits.
Challenges & Prospects
There are 3 major challenges to implementing IoT solutions in Bangladesh: people, infrastructure, and finance.
(i) Lack of both leadership support for making data-driven decisions and a workforce enabled with the skills required in implementing, utilizing, and maintaining the system.
(ii) Lack of high speed internet connectivity and hardware required for implementation.
(iii) Unwillingness of market-players to invest in adopting IoT into their businesses and services.
The major fields to be focused on are discussed below:
1. Market Structure:
To implement an IoT solution sensors/RFID tags are needed to produce data, network connectivity, and computing power to process the data sent through the network to produce information and insights. Once processed, the output can be fed back into the system to automatically control production processes such as in manufacturing goods, monitoring blood sugar levels of diabetics, and more efficient inventory management.
In the first phase of the Internet, vendors developed horizontal technologies and a selected-few only used internet for mainstream interaction with their customers for providing service. The majority of IoT projects currently lie in smart cities, connected industries, connected buildings and connected cars with most enterprises focusing on applications that reduce costs.
2. Connected devices:
There are more than 12 billion devices that can currently connect to the Internet, and researchers at IDC estimate that by 2020 there will be 26 times more connected things than people. Bangladesh’s late launch of 4G may turn out to be the key in making IoT deployment more feasible as Narrow Band IoT (NB-IoT) is supported by the majority of current 4G hardware. NB-IoT uses licensed frequencies and coexists with existing cellular broadband technologies, has considerable improved power consumption, system capacity and spectrum efficiency, and battery life of more than 10 years support, overcoming the majority of hurdles IoT deployment faces. Grameenphone has recently deployed NB-IoT on a limited scale, making Bangladesh and Sri-Lanka the only 2 countries in South Asia to have an NB-IoT network.
To incorporate the system in real time and everywhere at once in Bangladesh, it requires authorities to rethink how to architect, monetize and secure their connected systems – rather than simply connecting as many devices as possible.
3. Technology Concentration:
The first phase of the Internet converged on a few access technologies—Ethernet, Wi-Fi and mobile. IoT is driving a proliferation of access technologies based on different use cases and their specific requirements, including bandwidth, latency, power and proximity. This lack of uniformity compounds the complexity of the IoT environments. IoT and its vast amounts of streaming data require the evolution of cloud architectures to fog computing to provide real-time analytics at the edge of the network or on devices themselves.
4. Security Focus:
Traditional closed operational systems in factories or buildings are now open and connected, and consumer device vendors are more aware regarding comprehensive risk management. More institutions and businesses have been adopting smart-lock systems, Face ID and fingerprint scanners in their compounds. This has enabled more consumers of Google Home devices, Amazon Echo, etc. Many corporations have implemented smart-locks in the office and brought the use-case of these devices to an employee level.
5. Standards:
The sheer number of horizontal, vertical and regional standards bodies and consortia working on frameworks, architectures and standards can be overwhelming. And the resulting volumes of overlapping and contradicting semi-proprietary standards combined with long-lasting standards wars create even more challenges.
Way Forward:-
Recently in Bangladesh, Datasoft has been at the forefront of IoT developments, though the 3 major telecom operators in the country have also begun offering a number of IoT-enabled solutions.
1. DataSoft:
In 2017, DataSoft signed an agreement with Japanese company Smart Life to develop and implement smart-home technology in 10,000 homes in Tokyo. The company is installing IoT-based toll management systems for Congo and working to mitigate the water supply shortage of Saudi Arabia. Datasoft will introduce 4 IoT devices to detect gas and water leakage, as well as smoke and intrusions in their clients’ homes on a subscription basis. DataSoft has become renowned to the rest of the world and with a production plant located in Gazipur, the company aims to make IoT devices for both local and foreign consumers. The company has also signed an MoU with Grameenphone.
2. Grameenphone:
Grameenphone provides its own Smart Home, Smart Security and Smart Attendance services alongside the Vehicle Tracking Service. It also introduced the country’s first IoT-based digital livestock management solution Digi Cow for livestock farmers. Grameenphone is also marketing the IoT solutions for vehicles produced by BanglaTrac. Chinese company Hexing is working with Grameenphone in demonstrating its own NB-IoT enabled Gas meter and NB-IoT enabled Smart Prepayment Energy Meter. On October 21, 2018, they signed a joint-venture deal with the state-owned West Zone Power Distribution Company (WZPDCL) to create the company “Bangladesh Smart Electrical Company Limited”. Inovace Technologies helped Grameenphone in developing its own fingerprint attendance service called “TipSoi 21”.
3. Robi:
Robi launched their own Smart Home and Smart Attendance systems as well as Industrial IoT services. It signed an agreement with Sri Lankan start-up nCinga to create an IoT solution focused on helping the RMG industries of Bangladesh.
4. Banglalink:
Banglalink has its own Vehicle Tracking Service and the Watchmaniss Security Service, a security service for corporates.
Institutions like BRAC University, Grameenphone in collaboration with IEEE, Datasoft, Bangladesh Skill Development Institute, Global Skills Development Agency are already providing training to solve the knowledge gaps regarding IoT.
For Bangladesh to spur growth through IoT, it must increase awareness about IoT in both public and private enterprises, and build stronger industry-academia collaboration for a workforce prepared for the constantly changing technological landscape.
